How to pepper your kitchen with Pantone purple and ultraviolet accents
By Mike James
The Pantone Colour Institute has named Ultra Violet as the Colour of the Year 2018. It’s a vibrant shade of purple that’s been described by colour experts as ‘thoughtfully provocative’ and is meant to convey originality, creativity and visionary thinking. Make of this what you will, the fact is that you’ll find this glorious shade everywhere in home interiors this year. But in your kitchen?
Unless you have professional design skills, purple can be an awkward customer when it comes to interior decorating. Would you paint your kitchen purple? Would you invest in purple kitchen units? However much you may like the shade, it’s a brave choice and a commitment you may not be ready to make.
Luckily, according to The Brighton Kitchen Company – a specialist kitchen design company in Mid Sussex, there are many other ways to adopt this trendy hue in your kitchen. Rather than overwhelming the senses with a powerful colour, think about adding vibrant accents here or there and suddenly Ultra Violet becomes a joyful and quirky finishing touch that lifts your kitchen design scheme above the mundane.
Here are some of my favourite ideas for adding a splash of purple to your kitchen:
KitchenAid Stand Mixer
Put a wow factor on your worktop, with a KitchenAid Stand mixer in Grape or Plumberry. A staple in kitchens the world over, it was first built for commercial bakers back in 1914 and the iconic design hasn’t really changed much since.
If you love the retro look of this heritage brand, the robust build quality of the full metal design and the fact that this is a proper, hard working culinary tool for serious home chefs and bakers, a bright purple KitchenAid will look fantastic in any kitchen environment.
Le Creuset Cassis
Bring your kitchen colour scheme right up to date with this gorgeous range of farmhouse inspired cookware, tableware, utensils and accessories from premium French brand Le Creuset, famed for their colourful range of kitchen classics.
Choose from the signature cast iron casserole and other classic ovenware, rustic crockery and dinnerware, even aprons and oven gloves – all in Cassis, a beautiful deep ombre purple that will bring a touch of practical elegance to your everyday kitchen interiors.
Big Chill Purple Fridge
For a real statement piece in your kitchen space, how about investing in a big American retro fridge? Big Chill have a limited edition in purple that will create a fun and trendy focal point in the kitchen for all those who want to indulge their passion for purple.
This huge retro refrigerator would look incredible in a modern kitchen, and it offers all the amenities of today’s fridges. It has a stamped metal body, authentic chrome trim, pivot handles, a sophisticated temperature management system and excellent energy efficiency.
Ginsu Japanese Knives
Every kitchen worth its salt should have a decent set of knives, with Japanese knives being the absolute gold standard. These Ginsu Japanese knives come with ergonomically designed purple handles that will complement any kitchen beautifully.
The set of 14 essential knives is designed with robustness in mind and includes every kind of knife you could possible need to prepare meals including a 5 inch Santoku knife, a 4.5 inch utility knife, a 5 inch tomato knife and a 3 inch paring knife. What’s more, these Ginsu stainless steel knives come in an attractive wooden knife block and never need sharpening!
AGA Range Cooker
If the kitchen is the heart of the home, then an AGA must surely be the beating heart of the kitchen. More than a purely aesthetic must-have feature for country kitchens, range cookers are great for cooking with radiant heat from cast iron ovens that gently cook food, look in flavour, moisture and goodness.
Why not inject a dose of personality to your AGA by choosing a boldly coloured appliance? AGA’s colour palette includes gorgeous shades in Heather and Aubergine.
The Denby Pottery Company has been making stoneware and dinnerware since back in the 19th century. It’s famous for its British designed pieces that are perfect for everyday family use, and its continuously updated ranges, many of which have now become coveted collector items.
Among the current range is the very on-trend Denby Heather, a ‘bold and opulent pattern that celebrates individuality, style and the highest standards of English craftsmanship’. From breakfast and dinnerware to serving dishes and glassware, you can go as purple as you like.
Royal Scot Belgravia Crystal
Finally, why not add a touch of purple opulence to your table setting with beautiful crystalware in Amethyst Purple, courtesy of Royal Scot Belgravia? Their lead crystal stemware and tumblers are lavishly hand cut creating a beautiful kaleidoscope effect that will sparkle on your dinner table.
