Lighting for cooks

By

Are you a budding chef that loves nothing more than trying out new recipes and experimenting with different ingredients? Any keen cook needs a fully functional kitchen that caters for their every need from a smart layout, practical storage and well-positioned lighting.

When choosing your lighting scheme it is important to think about how you use your kitchen and how lighting can work in accordance to this. If your kitchen is the regular hot spot for entertaining friends and family, then mood lighting is likely to be more of a priority for you.

For a God or Goddess in the kitchen, well thought out task lighting is a must.

Under-cabinet task lighting that illuminates the work surface should be at the top of your list so you can clearly see the food you are preparing. Under-cabinet lighting comes in the form of spot lighting or strip lighting. To illuminate the front of the worktop where you will be working, rather than just the splash back and rear of the work surface, opt for an angled strip light for optimum illumination of the worktop.

Alternatively, it is now possible to buy a system where a ‘track’ can be installed under the wall-hung cabinet and individual light fittings can be clicked onto the track and moved along to where they are needed. You can fix as many or as little light fittings onto the track as you like and it is a great way of having the direct source of light you need and where you need it.

Of course, lighting isn’t just needed for food preparation and cooking, you want it to help you find your ingredients and utensils quickly and easily too. Fitting lighting with an integrated sensor into your drawers, cabinets and even your larder means that when you open the door the light will come on and when you close it, it will go off. If the fitting doesn’t have a sensor built-in, it is possible to purchase one separately.

Smart and convenient lighting like this will save you both time and the frustration of finding the one thing you need when you don’t know where you’ve put it!
