The Outdoor Kitchen Advantage: Open Air Entertaining
By Linda Parker
The trend for outdoor kitchens continues unabated, with layouts getting more elaborate and comfortable. It’s not just about the cooking equipment it’s now about the adjoining seating area, the drinks chillers, the serving spaces and overhead canopies or shades as well. Here’s some impressive concepts for your inspired outdoor kitchen ideas…
SUPER-LUXE OUTDOOR DINING SPACE WITH KONIG OUTDOOR
This is definitely an outdoor kitchen of dreams … Every kitchen is individually designed after careful consultation with the clients, and each KonigOutdoor uses 12mm thick Konig sintered stone work surfaces, which are available in range of eight finishes. Pick out the appliances required, from pizza ovens to outdoor grills and refrigerators. This particular layout is partially enclosed, and features a bar-style island layout.
OUTDOOR DINING, COOKING AND VIEWING WITH KONIG OUTDOOR
Another stunning design from KonigOutdoor, this time involving a separate dining area with two islands at each end, one featuring a covered BBQ grill, prep sink and refrigerator, and the other featuring a pizza oven. There’s also an outdoor screen – perfect for film or sports nights. There’s a huge choice of materials available for adventurous designers, not just Konig Stone but also TechnoWood, which is a real timber veneer wrapped over aluminium, as well as cedar wood, granite and brickwork.
THE CLASSIC GARDEN KITCHEN BY HUCKLEBERRY
Go for understated classic style in a country garden with the Classic Garden Kitchen by Huckleberry Garden Kitchens. These designs have longevity … they are made from oak, using traditional methods, include mortice and tenon joints. Topped with Dekton surfaces and a choice of appliances, such as Big Green Egg kamado BBQs, Beefeater gas grills, Blastcool fridges, Gozney pizza ovens and other Wolf appliances.
THE CONTEMPORARY OPTION FROM LIME LACE
If you’re looking for a rather more minimalist approach to outdoor cooking and dining, consider the range of Whistler Grills at Lime Lace. This is the Fairford Six Piece Modular set, comprising a fridge, gas bottle cabinet, side burner cabinet, triple drawer cabinet, Egg cabinet (Egg not included) and a BBQ. Surfaces are Laminam, and it’s available in Black or Grey. Design details include double-skinned doors and drawers, and a skirting system so that the wheels and castors are out of sight.
A STUNNING OUTDOOR OVEN FROM DIRECT STOVES
The Morso Forno Outdoor Oven from Direct Stoves can be used to BBQ or as a pizza oven, so is a good choice for flexible outdoor cooking. It’s made from double-coated cast iron, which has high heat retention, providing even cooking. There’s a cover included, pizza tools and cooking tools available according to choice. Also available as a Deluxe Set, which includes a trolley/table with log storage space.
GRILLO OUTDOOR KITCHENS – IN MODULAR FORM
Put your outdoor kitchen together using the modular format from Grillo, which can be accommodated to embrace almost every outdoor cooking requirement that’s possible. Cabinets, Bars, Bar tables come in 120cm wide modules. Other must-haves come in 60cm modules, such as BBQ stations – in gas, electric and charcoal versions, as well as benches, hanging utensils and lanterns. Can also be seen at branches of London Stone showrooms, alongside their outdoor decking, paving and tile options.
FURTHER INSPIRATION FROM GRILLO
As if more prompting was needed, here’s a perfect example of an outdoor kitchen by Grillo. We think that this trend for outdoor living-kitchens is only going to get bigger and more desirable. Potentially there will be a lot of ‘everyday’ indoor kitchen projects that may need to be designed with the thought that there will also be an outdoor kitchen alongside which will also be used on a regular basis.

Built-in modules in the Block D (Gen 5) outdoor kitchen system by Flammkraft include such genius concepts as the Drawer Inserts, which could be used for ice-cubes and drinks accessories, or perhaps for ingredients that are needed throughout the cooking process, such as garnishes, herbs etc. Keeping everything covered and hygienic is always wise, especially in high summer temperatures.
BACK TO INDOOR KITCHENS WITH THE NEW SUPERSIZE SINK FROM CAPLE
Caple has just launched a large-scale, super-sized ceramic sink for busy kitchens. It’s a generous 900mm wide, can be installed with a waste-disposal unit, is a sit-on design that will need to be teamed with separate taps. The Hamilton is a good choice for anyone who wants a large scale sink that can multi-task – use it for washing up, draining crockery, soaking flowers in a bucket or hand-washing a cashmere jumper!
PROTECT INTERIORS FROM UV DAMAGE WITH MITCHELL & DICKINSON UV-FILTERING COSYGLAZING
If your new kitchen project requires window refurbishment, and the rooms are particularly sunny, then protection from UV damage can be worth considering. Conservatory-style kitchens in period properties can be vulnerable, and owners may want to provide an element of protection against sun damage. Glazing experts Mitchell & Dickinson now offer new UV-filtering CosyGlazing, blocking up to 99% of UV light which can be harmful to furnishings, antiques, and décor. It’s designed to be used for period properties, whilst preserving natural light and providing thermal insulation. This kind of secondary glazing can be used in Grade I and Grade II listed buildings, and can be removed for cleaning if required.
