The story:  A quintessential British home with a Scandi twist, this impressive Yorkshire project by The Main Company demonstrates the perfect blend of modern and country style. From the stone flooring to the double-height beamed ceiling, the kitchen space was the perfect setting for The Main Company’s Reena Simon kitchen range.

Creating a country-meets-Scandi aesthetic, the kitchen seamlessly integrates the exclusive range with classic, dark accents and unique features. Painted in Farrow & Ball’s Down Pipe, the kitchen embodies the essence of bespoke design, combining the welcoming and relaxing feel of Reena Simon’s range with the timeless charm of shaker-style cabinetry.

Designer Q&A:

Q) What was your brief from the client?

The brief was to combine country aesthetics with a contemporary, Scandi feel. Working with a space that had a double-height beamed ceiling, it was important for the kitchen to work within such a tall space and still feel sympathetic to the country, rustic feel whilst remaining modern and inviting.

By balancing Scandi and Shaker aesthetics, we were able to create a kitchen that had a big impact on entrance, that matched the eye-catching focal point double-height windows.

Q) How did you answer that brief?

The Reena Simon range was the perfect combination of Scandi rustic and contemporary. We were able to incorporate a Scandinavian undertone to the design while keeping some elements of traditional Shaker, creating the perfect blend of modern and country style.

The combination of light oak with dark painted cabinetry creates a welcoming and relaxing feel whilst remaining sympathetic to the country feel of the space. The fluted glass cabinetry and light solid oak finishes add depth and interest, elevating the overall aesthetic while adding elegance and softness to the scheme.

An inviting and perfectly balanced space, the dark cabinets, grey upholstered stools and stainless steel splashback create an interesting contrast with the soft, natural touch of Reena Simon’s range.

Q) Which products did you use and why?

We used washed oak on the central oven run, breakfast bar and island glazed cupboard. The rest of the island, tall larder units and fridges are Shaker in style.

Unifying the differing elements, brass hardware from Carlisle Brass injects a touch of elegance and cohesion, whilst the light quartz worktops help tie everything together visually.

A wooden breakfast counter complements the beautiful exposed beams, helping to retain warmth and character while ensuring the kitchen isn’t overwhelmed by the scale of the open-plan room, a key consideration and challenge for this project.

Q) Which design elements do you think make the scheme so successful?

The success of this scheme lies within the balance of the materials and the colours. The design feels very spacious due to the layout and the open oak frame, whilst the style choices are the perfect combination of Scandinavian warmth meets traditional shaker.

Q) Any advice for anyone who may be planning their own new kitchen project?

Do as much research as possible on the building. Take care when choosing materials/finishes and think about how you intend on interacting within the space.

Hayley loves: the relaxed vibe this room creates, as well as the balance of pale wood and dark painted timber, which works wonderfully in this stunning open-plan space.
