Designer Q&A:
Q) What was your brief from the client?
As enthusiastic hosts, the clients’ main request was to keep the existing Miele ovens within the white chimney breast while designing a kitchen that is both functional and visually impressive. Their key priorities included seating for at least four, the use of solid timber (not veneers), a dedicated wine fridge and integrated wine chiller, along with a design that was both unique and eye-catching.
Q) How did you answer that brief?
After extensive deliberation and the exploration of various sample combinations, the final selection was solid walnut, solid oak, copper and Neolith worktops.
To accelerate the aging process of the copper, we applied heat with a blowtorch, achieving an iridescent, almost oily sheen. The copper was then used to clad the drawers and sections of the island, creating striking focal points that contributed to the overall wow factor.
With the clients love of entertaining (and champagne), we came up with the idea for a large bespoke copper ice trough/sink set into the island that could have multiple uses ranging from chilling wine and food to a place for growing herbs for cooking. We took the concept to the next level by adding colour changing LEDs so that this unique feature could take centre stage.
Q) Which products did you use and why?
All appliances are by Miele, including an undercounter wine fridge, integrated dishwasher, integrated fridge and freezer and zoneless downdraft induction hob.
Q) Which design elements do you think make the scheme so successful?
The wine trough was a massive hit with the clients and when filled with ice and illuminated, looks stunning. The copper finishes also gave the kitchen a warmth and added intrigue, which is very striking upon entering the room.
Q) Any advice for anyone who may be planning their own new kitchen project?
Always consult a kitchen designer as they will be able to make layout suggestions that you hadn’t considered. One of the standout remarks that we receive from our clients is how surprised they were that they hadn’t considered many of the options we put forward for layouts.
