The future’s bright…

If you’ve ever wondered what the kitchen of the future may look like, I can safely say it will be high-tech and eco-friendly.

Two phrases you may not necessarily put in the same sentence as a rule, but when I attended the launch of the new iPad-controlled Smart APP-artment in central London a few weeks ago, they were the perfect partners for a slick, stylish kitchen that has user-friendly features at its core.

The Smart APP-artment is Cornflake’s stunning, designer-styled experience centre, where invited clients can road test the very latest technology.

The apartment itself is designed by Cornflake, a leading home automation company, and in a retail concept new to the UK, clients are invited to “live in” to experience the lifestyle benefits of the incredible array of products for sale.

On arrival, you are handed an iPad from which you can control every aspect of the home – you can watch a movie in the home cinema, play games on the two-metre gaming screen, dance on the revolving dance floor in the games room, listen to music in the audio room and curl up in front of the i-fire. You can also manage the heating, lighting, blinds and security all via the iPad.

For me though, it was the kitchen that captured my attention with its state-of-the-art De Dietrich appliances (DOP1190GX TFT Touchscreen Oven with ICS, Pyroclean and Interactive Display, DOS1195GX Compact 45cm Touch Control Multifunction Oven with Pyroclean and Steam Functions, DTiM1000C Piano ‘Zoneless’ Induction Hob and DVH1180GJ 60cm ICS Dishwasher), i-coffee machine that can be operated by the touch of a button from anywhere in the house and beautiful rift-sawn rippled effect walnut cabinets, which were crafted by Ecoism using sustainable materials.

Other eco-friendly products used within the apartment include recycled porcelain floor tiles made from waste dust, cork leather wallpaper, bamboo flooring, watersaving sanitaryware, natural clay plaster and joinery made from FSC timbers.

An award-winning design team was also commissioned to give the interior a homely feel and it was April Russell who took on the styling of the 4000sq ft space, making you feel at home even when you’re surrounded by James Bond-style gadgets in every corner!

See the Smart App-artment for yourself – bookings are by appointment only Monday to Friday and by request at weekends.
